The Series 900, replacement spiral balance for a tilt-in window sash, screws in at the top and clips into the top of the pivot shoe in the jamb and stays in place with the pressure gained by tensioning.

The Series 900 spiral balances need to be tensioned (charged) upon installation by turning the spiral rod. Start with a few rotations equal on both sides of the sash. If the sash drops, add tension by rotating rod again clockwise. Do not exceed more than two full turns at a time, doing both sides equally.
The pivot shoe should be below the balance as to be able to plug in the charged spiral rod.

Take a look at this guide about tensioning spiral window balances.
