Is this handle for the left or right side?

There is no reference to a left side handle vs. a right side handle. Is this an option with this model?

The Sears door handle 40-043 is not sided. The handle can be simply flipped to work left or right.

I have double storm doors from Sears that are 1-3/4" thick. This set is for one door which means I have to buy two sets?

Usually one door has a working lock and the other door has a "dummy" lock just for aesthetics. What do your doors currently have? Feel free to post pictures by emailing them to discussions@swisco.com

No need for pictures. The old door handles look the same as the set you offer. Both are capable of locking but one is acting as a dummy. I first tried to switch them but both are broken in different ways. I really hate to spend nearly $75 and if I did I would prefer to have black handles.
