16" spiral balance replacements

A contractor from Louisville, KY. says:
I'm trying to find the replacement balances for an unknown window manufacturer that had white tipped spiral balances. I purchased S900-16 red tipped balances, thinking that their ability to carry the heavy load of the sash would be a better idea, but I was not able to increase the tension of the new balances to even begin to balance the sash. The only information that I could find on the window was: "AAMA 101-85, DH-R30/DH-C3". Can you help in finding the balances needed for this window?
Thank you

Thanks for contacting us. First, can you confirm that the S900-16 was the proper replacement? Did it have the same length and diameter outer tube as your original? Also, what is the weight of the sash these balances are supporting?

Tom:
First, this was a repair for a home that was in the process of being sold. I can only guess that these tubes were the correct ones. But, someone else may have replaced them at an earlier time with incorrect tubes. The existing tubes were 16" in length and had white tips, but had failed in being able to adjust enough tension to balance the window. Without a scale to weigh the sash, I can only guess that it may weigh about 15 to 20 pounds - it feels heavy for an aluminum double pane window.

Hmm... it's odd that a Red Tip didn't carry that kind of weight. You should have been good to go after 2 or 3 charges, assuming this was the correct balance. The only thing I can think of is that you need something different, but without more detailed information on the originals I cannot be sure what. I would triple check the diameter of the outer tube to be sure it's 3/8" and confirm the weight of the sash. In my experience, this kind of thing happens when a skinnier 3/8" balance is used to replace the thicker 5/8" Series 600 balance, but that's no guarantee.
A quick learner from Louisville, KY. says:
Hey Tom:
Now that I've actually measured the diameter of the balance, it turns out that they ARE 5/8". And they have white tips. As I mentioned, I don't have a scale to weigh the sash, but I'd estimate that it may be about 15 to 20 pounds. So, what might be the correct balance for this sash?
Thanks
Jim

Tom from SWISCO responded:
That'll explain it. I would recommend our Series 600 spiral balance. I think your old White Tip might correspond to our modern Red Tip, but the only way to be 100% sure is to have the sash weight.
