It looks like you show two different balances. Are these off the same window? If so, you should only be using one type. Let me know and we can work from there. If these are from two different windows, though, then I would recommend our 5/8" diameter Series 600 for the thicker one and the 3/8" Series 900 for the skinny one. The pivot shoe could be our 15-046, but you will need to carefully make sure that our dimensions are the same as yours.

I have both the thin and the thick balances on each side of the window on both the lower and upper sashes.Both balances are clipped into one shoe. The windows are aluminum. The balances are 31" long. Why are there two balances on each side of the sash. Can they be replaced with one heavier duty balance?

You should definitely have the same size balance on one window for both sides. You can probably safely replace both with the larger Series 600 spiral balance. Weigh your sash with a bathroom scale to determine the best color tip option for the S600-31. You can see a chart on the S600-31 store page.
