Alside 0201 spring and boot replacement

A handy person from Florida says:

I'm having trouble opening and closing my double hung window. When I removed the window I discovered the U shape in the boot is almost impossible to turn (using a flat head screwdriver). Once turned, the boot can be moved up and down, but not smoothly. I'm hoping replacing the entire mechanism will fix the issue. Could a worn boot cause the mechanism to be difficult to turn?

Pictures are attached of the boot and springs. I'm not sure if both springs are identical as only one has a stamp on it.

The window that I pulled out weighs about 22 lbs. That's the bottom window.

Hey there,

Thanks for reaching out to us! Your coil balance shoe appears to be an older, discontinued Simonton Coil Balance Shoe. We typically suggest replacing this shoe with the 15-192 CertainTeed Pivot Shoe but you may need to shave down the aligners on the shoe to install it into the window track. Take a look over the dimensions to confirm that this shoe would be a fit.

This shoe is compatible with the Series 170 Coil Balance as well as the Series 171 Coil Balance. Since the sash weighs 22lbs and the spring on the top of the other is stamped with a 6, you'll likely need the S170-405 for the bottom coil and the S171-406 for the top coil. This combination will give your 11lbs on each side to support the 22lb sash.

The compatible cover is likely to be 15-156 CertainTeed Lance Spring Cover used along with the 15-157 Balance Drum. Keep in mind, your existing pivot bar is not likely to be compatible with this replacement pivot shoe. If you are not sure, I'll need to see a photo of it as well.

I also wanted to make you aware of another option that could potentially work for your repairs. We are now recommending the 15-259 Coil Balance Pivot Shoe, which should fit will in the window track along with the Series 159 coils. Four of the S159-5 Coil Balances would work to support the 22lb sash, since they are 5.5lb coils. This assembly would use the 15-256 Coil Double Support.

You would also need to replace the pivot bar with the 26-083 since your existing pivot bar wouldn't be compatible with the 15-259 shoe.

Thank you for your assistance. The measurements appear to match on the second option so I think I'll give that a try. I've attached a photo of what I believe I need to order. Does this look correct?

Thanks again!

I'm happy to help! The cart looks perfect. The parts added will be enough to fix one window.

Please let me know if there is anything else I might be able to assist with.

A handy person from Florida says:
I received the ordered parts today. It appears the new pivot bars are the incorrect size. The screw holes are too small and they are not spaced properly. Can you tell from the photo which pivot bars I need to fit the new pivot shoe (15-259)? The old one appears to be stamped with a "3" if that helps. Let me know if you need more photos or info.

Thank You.

Hello,

I'm glad to hear that you received your order. The 26-083 is the pivot bar compatible with the 15-259 Pivot Shoe. To install them, you may need to purchase a new screw if your existing screw does not fit.

As a reminder, I've included a video tutorial in my initial response that demonstrates a detailed explanation on how to covert your Simonton balance assembly to the recommended replacement. You'll find this at the 1:57 mark in the video; you can view that here.

I hope this helps!
