Yes, you're analysis is pretty much dead on. These guides install in one of two ways: either they screw in using those small holes you see, or they hook into the door using those top hooks. In my experience most mirror closet doors like yours use the hooks. I could probably count on one hand how many times I saw these actually held in place with screws. |

In this case, lay the door down on a stable surface and then use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gradually pull the hooks of the roller out of the door. There's no real trick to this other than some patience and elbow grease. Installing a replacement works the same way, in reverse. |
