This old rod balance is no longer made, but you likely can replace it with one of our tilt window channel balances here. To know which, please show us whatever clip, shoe, or fitting is attached to the bottom of the rod. You may need to check an undamaged balance to locate this. That part will identify the potential channel balance substitute.

These photos are perfect, thank you! It looks like you have a terminal clip at the end of the cord, which means you can use our modern Series 770 channel balance as a replacement.

This should be a 1:1 replacement, so no adaptation will be required. You will have to weigh your sash to determine the proper weight rating for the new balance. You will also need to measure an undamaged version of the original balance to determine length; it's not possible to accurately measure these when they're broken, since the whole assembly springs apart.

Please let me know if you had any other questions.

The sash weight 19 lbs

Would it be better and easier to use the Spiral Series

Hello! I'm glad you were able to get the weight of the sash. As for measuring the old balance, you need to get an undamaged version and measure it from the top of the black attachment at the top to the bottom of the plastic cap at the bottom. You don't measure the pivot shoe or the clip at all. I have to emphasize that the balance you measure must be in undamaged condition, as well, otherwise you aren't going to get an accurate measurement.

I also don't think it'd be any easier to use a Spiral balance, no. The Series 770 is a direct replacement and we've been using it for years with great success. It's very easy to install, all you need to do is figure out the right size and weight capacity. That's unfortunately not something I can determine for you with a photo of a tape measure. You will need to measure your balance and use your best judgment to pick out the right balance length for the job.

A handy person from Pa says:
Is this the right one, the rod is 28" with both the end caps, the spring is 13 1/2" from both end loops, the other picture I took the sash out and slide the bottom piece up so you could see it, hope this helps

You don't want to measure just the spring by itself, nor do you want to measure the cord. Just cap to cap, nothing else. If your cap to cap measurement is 28" then the S770-28 is going to be what you want.

You can see a full price breakdown, as well as all available weight options, on the S770-28 store page.
