Help in identifying best spiral balances for old non-tilt windows

A quick learner from Alabama says:

Hi. I have four old commercial 4'x5' metal framed windows that need new balances. Based on everything that I could gleam from your website, I am guessing that I might be able to retrofit the 29" series 400 version. The current balances do not have a color tip. The steel tubes are 3/8" in diameter. Some of the balances still retain (at least a portion of) a plastic sleeve that increases the diameter a little bit but not much. Length is around 28.5". The bottom mounting brackets are unique in design, but I think retrofitting the #14 brackets would be easy. I am not able to remove the sashes to weigh them, but should be able to do so by placing a portable scale in the window if actual weight is critical. The sashes are 2.5' by 4' but with 1/8" glass, they don't seem very heavy. Your help in identifying viable replacement balances is greatly appreciated!

Hi there, John.

I agree with the balance you picked out. If the outer tube diameter is 3/8", then the Series 400 is what you want. You can also find a list of compatible brackets under the Related Item(s) section on the S400-29 store page. To determine what color tip to go with, you will have to weigh the window sash on a scale. There's a chart under the product description that will tell you what option is best based on the sash weight.
