How to determine what length balance.

A handy person from san jose, california says:

I'm working on an older, probably Viking window. The balances are missing and customer asked me to fix it as he is going to sell the house. The window missing both balances is a small bathroom window. It is 24" x 17" high. Looking at the balances in adjacent larger obviously same manufacturer windows I see they are Caldwell balances, and one has a number 23 2 JQ. Searching for the right balance I've discovered Swisco has a series 395 channel balance that looks just like the balances in the adjacent windows. The balance is 24" long and it came out of a 26 1/4 high window.-----Since the window I'm trying to fix is 17" high, I'm thinking maybe I need to get 15" balances for it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, George

If a side load balance came out of 26-1/4" high sash at 24" metal channel not counting the nylon ends, then for the 17" bathroom sash should be S395-15. As for choosing the correct stamp option, you will need to weigh your window sash and get back to us with that exact weight number.

Thank you for responding. That sash weighs 12 pounds. Another FYI for you > > > from that balance retainer clip located near the top of the window measuring down to the first hook hole the measure is 13 inches. To the second hole just below the top hole the measure is 14 inches. I'll be glad to order 2 of balances once you tell me what I should get. Thank you very much. You really made this job easier for me. George

Thanks for the reply, George. Correct, the 1430 stamp option looks good to us. Thank you for considering our business, we really do appreciate it.

Thank you. I'll call Swisco today and order 2 of those balances. Timing is good too. The house had an open house this week-end and will probably get sold this week. Thanks again. George
