Thanks for writing in! It looks like we previously recommended the S500-39 along with the 17-012 Bracket, #32 for you replacement balance and attachment. Although, you'll want to be sure to double check that your balance does have a 5/8" diameter.

Since the sash weighs 18-20lbs, you'll need to select the red tip option.

Thanks for reaching out. We typically recommend replacing balances with what is already installed in the window but it sounds like someone may have installed incorrect balances in a few of them. 

To determine the size of the balances that should in the window, I'll need a bit more information about each of the windows you're concerned about. To start, can you confirm if these are wood windows or aluminum windows?

Please also confirm the visible height of the glass pane in each sash. We'll be able to use this dimension to determine the exact balances that should be installed in the window. There may be more information we'll need beyond this, but this is a good place to start.
