missing balances

A landlord from santa clarita, ca says:
Hello! I just realized that my past tenant took / lost the window balances. I need to replace them so that the windows can open and function properly. How do I measure the window to know what length replacement I need. In addition, how do I know what weight range to select?

Thank you for your help!

Without the old balances, it will be very hard to say what can work. Do you have an identical window in the house that uses the same hardware? You could use that as a reference. If not, do you know the name of the manufacturer?
