screws not able to secure window locks again

A quick learner from California says:
we have a hung caldwell window with sweeping locks. we took off the locks for about thirty minutes, and want to put them back on again, but there seems to be metal preventing the screw from entering their holes. Any guesses as to what is going on, and how to put them back on again without damaging the window?

My guess is that you have an internal metal stiffener bar inside the top rail of the window sash. I believe that when you took off the lock, that bar shifted and now its holes are not lining up with the lock holes. You could re-drill new holes, but you have to make sure you don't drill into the glass. Alternatively, you could remove your sash from the frame and try tilting the sash to see if that gets the bar to slide back into the original position.
