spiral no numbers lenght is 24 inches

Yes the 500 series.

How do you get it to catch on to the side of the window? Just push it up and turn it and hope?

On the window there are no screws or holes on the bottom of the window to install or loosen. It appears the part was just stuck into the side somehow. I have just purchased the house and there are 5 windows all with the same issue

The tip of the spiral balance usually attaches to a bracket of some kind, which in turn attaches to the sash, either by clipping on or screwing on. The thing is, the Series 500 works with a few different kinds. You can see what we offer here.
