what is the purpose of the slanted portion on the bottom of a top sash guide?

This would be to help align the balance top as it slides into and hooks onto the guide lip.

Ok I have alenco windows from the 1990's and your top guide 18-174 dimensions are the same as the ones on my windows, except the ones from my windows have the slanted portion on the bottom of the guide but the 18-174 guides have no angled portion. Will they still work?

Take a look at SWISCO product code 18-009, Top Sash Guide. If this does not match up to your original, please send us a photo or detailed drawing with measurements; we would be happy to research it for you.
