updating old windows

Currently all of the sash support hardware sold on SWISCO.com is only for replacement and is not recommended for new applications. You may want to contact a local contractor that is familiar with wood windows; you may be able to get a referral from a local mill that makes wood windows for a new balance system.
A handy person from Danbury, New hampshire says:
I have 150 yr old single hung windows in good condition, that I do not want to replace. However, they do not have any sort of balance system on them and instead rely on 'shaker' stepped sticks to be held up. While we have relied on this for 35 years I am looking for a method that would reduce the force that need to be applied to lift the sashes. Will the spiral balances work for this application?
