Installing a Storm Door

For Expander Type Storm Doors (Not Pre-Hung)

SWISCO storm doors are expander type doors (not pre-hung). The side expanders run the full height; the top and bottom expanders fit between the side expanders. SWISCO storm doors have 1 1/2" expanders which allow expansion up to 2" in both width and height.  See Swisco's online catalog section of storm door replacement hardware.

1. Using #6 x 5/8" screws, install weather-stripped stop along the sides and top of opening.




2. Cut hinge expander 5/16" less than the opening.




3. Using the #8 x1" screws, install the hinge expander onto the jamb leaving an approximate 3/32" clearance at the top and 7/32" clearance at the bottom.
   

4. Position the door in the hinge expander so approximately 1/2 of the width expansion is taken up and the door is hanging square with at least 1/2 of the width expansion is taken up and the door is hanging square with at least 1/2 of the expansion at the bottom. Fasten the expander to the door with five #6 x 3/8" set screws on the inside. The door should now hang and swing feely.
   *Note: When installing set screws drill approximately 5" away from corner.




5. Cut the latch side expander 5/16" less than the opening height. Place the expander on the door leaving 3/32" clearance at the side and top, and 7/32" clearance at the bottom. THE LONG LEG OF THE EXPANDER SHOULD BE INSTALLED TO THE OUTSIDE.




6. Allowing 3/32" clearance at the top and 7/32" clearance at the bottom, cut and place the top and bottom expanders on the door. The top and bottom expanders site between the side expanders. THE LONG LEG OF THE EXPANDER SHOULD BE INSTALLED TO THE OUTSIDE.
   *Note: When installing set screws drill approximately 5" away from corner.




7. Secure all expanders to the door on the inside with #6 x 3/8" screws (four on each side, two at the top, and two at the bottom).




8. Install latch according to the instructions (set template from inside). Be careful to avoid interference with the house door knob.




9. Install door closer and protector chain following instructions.




10. Install door sweep.
