40-095 Forever Door Locking Handle Installation

40-095 Forever Door Locking Handle Installation

This installation guide explains how to install the replacement Forever storm door handle lock set 40-095.

1) Prepare Door For Handle Installation
A:
Locate the center of the storm door by measuring up from the bottom or down from the top edge of the storm door 39-1/2" and mark with a pencil.
B:
Place the centerline of the template at the center location marked on the storm door. Fold the template around the edge of the storm door so the inside and outside of the template correspond to the inside and outside of the storm door. Align the storm door edge lines on the template with the storm door edges and tape it in place. Drill holes into the storm door according to the template. See Figure 1B.
Note: Check to make sure there will be no interference with the primary door handle prior to drilling. Move the template up or down if necessary.
TO INSURE THE PROPER ALIGNMENT OF THE HOLES, DRILL EACH HOLE FROM ITS OWN SIDE OF THE DOOR. DO NOT DRILL COMPLETELY THROUGH THE STORM DOOR.
2) Replacement Handle Installation
A:
Place the square spindle into the square hole of the inside latch assembly, insert and tighten the #4 x 5/1" spindle screw. See Figure 2ABC.
B:
Place the inside latch assembly onto the inside of the storm door by carefully guiding the spindle into the lower set of holes in the storm door. Insert two #8 x 1-1/2" machine screws through the latch assembly. Align the outside knob with the holes and the square spindle. Tighten the machine screws. See Figure 2ABC.
C:
Place the outside key cylinder plate onto the outside of the storm door by carefully guiding the spindle and screw bosses into the upper set of holes in the storm door. Insert two #8 x 2" machine screws through the deadbolt. Align the deadbolt with the holes, making sure the flat spindle is seated properly. Tighten the two screws. Check latch and deadbolt function. See Figure 2ABC
CAUTION: DO NOT FORCE ASSEMBLY BY OVERTIGHTENING THE SCREWS. IF SCREWS BIND, CHECK THE SPINDLES FOR PROPER SEATING.
3) Latch Spring Stricker Installation
A:
Place the spring loaded latch striker on the latch side of the storm door jamb. See Figure 3A.
B:
Hold the storm door closed form the inside and slide the striker into the latch notch centering the striker vertically on the latch.
  • If the outside temperature at the time of installation is 84 degrees Fahrenheit or below, line up the striker pin with the first groove in the striker.
  • If the outside temperature at the time of installation is 85 degrees Fahrenheit or above, line up the striker pin with the second groove in the striker.
Use striker shim provided with the handle set to achieve proper engagement if necessary. See Figure 3B.
C:
Mark the mounting slot locations through the top and bottom slots of the striker onto the storm door jamb and pre-drill two 7/64" pilot holes at the marked locations. Secure the striker with two #6 x 1-1/4" painted screws. Slide the striker in or out to achieve proper function and tighten the screws. Pre-drill two 7/64" pilot holes in the remaining two holes and secure with two #6 x 1-1/4" painted screws. See Figure 3C.
4) Deadbolt Striker Installation
A:
Close the storm door and extend the deadbolt to the locked position. See Figure 4ABC.
B:
Position the deadbolt striker behind the deadbolt and mark the mounting slot locations onto the door jamb. See Figure 4ABC.
C:
Pre-drill two 7/64" pilot holes at the marked locations. Shim the striker to engage the deadbolt if necessary and secure with two #6 x 1-1/4" screws. See Figure 4ABC.
5) Storm Door Handle Operation
When the storm door is closed and the inside handle is latched over the striker pin, the following actions need to be done in conjunction with each other to unlatch and open door.

Opening The Storm Door To Enter Your Home:
When opening your storm door to enter, turn the outside knob all the way to the left or right then pull the storm door open. This will allow the inside handle to unlatch and permit the door to be pulled open. If you do not have the outside knob turned all the way to the left or right at the same time you are pulling the storm door open, it will not unlatch.

Opening The Storm Door To Exist Your Home:
When opening your storm door to exit, depress the inside handle all the way towards the storm door and push the storm door open. This will allow the inside handle to unlatch and permit the storm door to be pushed open. If you do not have the inside handle depressed all the way while pushing the storm door open at the same time, the storm door will not unlatch to open.
IMPORTANT
  • The latch portion of the inside handle will not flip back independently.
  • The latch portion of the inside handle will not flip back if only the outside knob is turned.
  • The latch portion of the inside handle will not flip back if only the inside handle is depressed towards the door.
  • The latch portion of the inside handle will flip back when latch is hooked over the striker pin and the outside knob is turned and the storm door is pulled open at the same time.
  • The latch portion of the inside handle will flip back when the latch is hooked over the striker pin and the inside handle is depressed and the storm door is pushed open at the same time.
