FenestrationAn architectural term referring to the arrangement of windows in a wall.
Field GlazeThe glazing of a window after the frame has been installed in the structure.
Fin SealA form of pile weather-strip that has a plastic Mylar fin centered in the pile. This fin reduces air infiltration and ensures weather-strip contact throughout the window's life.
Finger-jointingA means of joining individual pieces of wood together to form longer lengths. The ends of the pieces are machined to form a set of interlocking fingers, which are then coated with adhesive and meshed together under pressure.
FinialsAlso called decorative tips, these may come in different shapes, such as balls or pointed steeples, which attach to the top and bottom of a hinge for decoration. Only some hinges will accept these finials.
FinishThe preparation of the surface of an aluminum window that adds color or protection to the aluminum. Mill finish is the unfinished surface of aluminum just as it comes from the mill. Painted finishes are factory applied to the aluminum extrusions before the assembly of the final product. Painted finishes come in many colors most commonly bronze (or brown), white, or beige. In rare instances and by special order, gray, blue, red or any color can been used. Anodized finishes are sometimes used, but mainly in architectural applications because of the expense. Clear lacquer finishes are called for on mill finish surfaces for protection during construction. (See Anodize)
FixedNon-venting or non-operable.
Fixed PanelThe non-operating panel of a sliding glass door.
Fixed UnitA stationary window or door that does not open -- also referred to as a fixed sash.
Fixed VentThe non-operating sash, lite, or panel of a sliding window or door.
FlangeA term used for masonry construction, it is a window frame with a head, jamb, and sill exterior perimeter leg longer than the interior perimeter leg. Also referred to as nail-fin, or overlap.
FlashingA thin strip of metal or synthetic material that diverts water away from a window or skylight. A metal or plastic strip attached to the outside of the side jambs and head to provide a weather barrier, preventing leakage between the window frame and wall.
Flat GridA rectangular shaped grid applied to the exterior side of a light.
Floating MuntinA type of muntin that actually separates lights of glass in a window but is not attached to the frame itself. (See Muntin and Divided Light)
Flush BoltsBolts mounted in a door to lock a door in place. These bolts slide up into the jamb above the door, and down into the threshold or floor below door. These are used primarily on double doors, where one door is locked in place and the other door is the one mainly used. When needed, the door locked in place can be opened. Flush bolts can also be called slide bolts, which are mounted to the face of the door. Flush bolts are mounted flush with the edge of the door.
FrameThe enclosure in which window sash or door panels are mounted. Outside members of a window unit which enclose the sashes. Composed of side jambs, head jamb and sill.
