spiral balance shoe

A quick learner from Irving, Texas says:

Once the shoe is installed on the spiral balance rod do you install the rod up from the bottom of the window or down from the top of the window.

First, attach the tube section of the balance to the top of the window's master frame with a screw. Next, raise the window sash and while holding the sash in the open position, raise the spiral balance to it. Just before locking the shoe to the sash, give the spiral two or three turns to add tension to the balance.
