28" balances

Quick Learner from united states
This is what I have.

It might be broken.

Also, there are 2 strings attached to the Rt & Lt window jambs (normally hooks engage in window jambs). Looks like the these strings attach to the springs in each balance creating the counter force to balance shash.

Balances normally have a hook at the end of their string to engage in window jamb!

Any ideas?

Thanks for posting. This looks like a pretty standard balance based on your photos, but it's too damaged for me to accurately identify. Do you have an undamaged version I can see? I need a clear picture of the top and bottom nylon fitting. If they're too broken, I won't be able to determine what they are. It's essential that they're undamaged.

I'm also not sure what you're referring to when you describe how the cord works. You're right when you say that this style of balance has a hook at the end of the cord. I've never seen an exception to this rule. Can you show me a picture of what you're talking about?
