Certainteed Windows

Quick Learner from USA

I bought my house in 2002 and the house had newish windows at that time.

I am thinking the CertainTeed windows were maybe installed in 2000.

Anyway, one of my double hung windows will not stay up, its super heavy to push up and will come slamming down if I let go.

I took a few pictures that I would like to send so I know which parts to order.

Hello! Sounds like you just need new springs. This old Certainteed assembly is compatible with our Series 170. All you need to do is match the stamp printed on the band of your old coil with those options you see available for this Series.

You should be able to reuse your old shoe and cover, since they appear to still be in good condition.

Hello, there is no stamp printed on the inside of the coil, what do I do?
Also, do I need new parts for the upper and lower coils on both sides of the window?

If there is no stamp on the base of the coil, your best bet would be to weigh the window sash and divide the weight by the total number of coils on both sides of the window to choose the correct strength options.

hello, I just weighed my window, my window weighs 14.6 lbs

so, if my window weights 14.6 lbs I divide that by 4 or divide that by 2?
these windows are from the year 2000 approx.

You would divide that by how many springs support that sash. Based on your photos it looks like you only have one spring per side, so you would divide it by 2. In your case I think the S170-407 would work just fine.

so, there are springs at the top and bottom of the window sash, correct? there is a spring inside the shoe cover and another one down by the metal cam. do I replace all 4 of them?

You should replace all 4 springs at the same time, yes. As for the top sash, these often also have a balance system, but not always. A lot of windows have fixed top sashes that aren't meant to be moved, taken out, or replaced.

Okay, based on our back and forth conversation above, please let me know exactly what quantity, part number, etc... I need to order for my situation, do you need any additional photos or descriptions from me to be able to put together an order quote for me?

Since you have two springs per side, you want four of the S170-407 spring that I mentioned in my previous response. All orders can be placed directly from our site at your convenience.

As long as your other parts are in good condition, which they appear to be, then you can reuse them all without issue.

If you do want to replace everything, though, then let me know. That may complicate matters a bit, since your old shoe isn't technically made anymore. We still have parts that will work for you, but it will take some extra handy work. I'm happy to walk you through it if that's the situation you're in, but if you can reuse your old parts then it will make your life a lot easier.
