Crank operator replacement options

Quick Learner from Holiday, FL

I have old aluminum awning windows that open vertically when cranked. I want to completely remove the crank handle mechanisms on the windows I don't use and cover the openings, but I need a way to lock the windows. I purchased covers for the crank handle slots, but when I tried to remove the mechanism the window popped open. Do you know of any external locking mechanism for aluminum awning windows that could be applied so I can remove the crank mechanism, cover the slot and have the window remain closed and secure?

Sincerely, Matthew

I would suggest installing some sheet metal screws to secure your window shut. You could install some screws on the out side lip of the vents, securing them to the sides of the main frame on the window.

Another way would be to install a screw on the inside of the main frame and try to catch one of the "hooks," or "link" arm. It would be a little tricky, but might also work to secure the window frame.

Older aluminum windows can be tricky. Not a lot of hardware is made for them anymore, so you'll have to get creative. You may want to check with a local hardware store, like a mom and pop type business who are familiar with homes in your area. They may have some old trick they like to use.

Hi Matthew, I'm wondering if you came up with a solution for this? I am trying to do something similar and can't figure out how to do it. Thanks.
