Old Rod/spring Window Balances to Replace

Quick Learner from Charleston, SC
Hello,
I have a number of windows in a house built in 2001. The balances have all broke and need to be replaced. I believe at least 4 windows would need replaced balances but I cannot find this style any longer. I found on your site that they have been discontinued. I'd be happy to provide any information needed. Your help will be incredibly appreciated!

Hello! These old rod-type balances aren't made anymore, unfortunately, but the good news is that you can use one of our modern channel balances as a replacement.

Your existing assembly is too damaged for me to identify a match. Would it be possible to see an undamaged version? I specifically need to see the pivot shoe at the bottom end. I would also like you to tell me the diameter of the spring (it should be either 1/2" or 3/8"). Thanks!

Hello Tom,
Thank you for your helpful reply.
I was able to get images of your requested items.
The spring is 1/2"
Photos are attached.
Please let me know what other information you need. I'll be happy to get that for you.

Thank you! This is a huge help. Our modern replacement for this is going to be the Series 795. Now, the process of using this balance to replace your original is a little involved, but we have a tutorial video that walks you through it every last step of the way. I highly recommend watching it to get an idea of what this project is going to take.

Thank you Tom! I appreciate your helpful explanations. The video was very clear and seems doable. I will get the weight of the windows and place the order for the balances and screw plugs as well.

One last question- every balance, including the 795 series, orders by length. Should I measure the length of one of the old rod/coil balances and use that as my estimate?

Thanks again!

You're very welcome, Aaron! I was happy to be of assistance.

Concerning length, you will need to measure the old balance, yes. I won't lie to you, either: getting an accurate measurement for length off a broken rod balance is difficult. When these break, they kind of become unsprung and it's next to impossible to determine what the length is from what's left. I highly recommend checking your house for an undamaged balance so that you can use that as a reference.
