Replacing Both Pivot Shoes

A quick learner from Southern Maryland says:
I have a number of windows with broken pivot shoes, should pivot shoes be replaced as a pair or can only the broken shoe be replaced.

Also, should the spiral balance springs be replaced or can they be reloaded into the repaired shoe?

You could re-use your old pivot shoe, as long as it's not broken. For the balances, though, you really should replace both at once. Due to the way these springs are designed to work, having a new one paired with an old one means that the new one will wear out faster, since it has to pick up the slack for the older, weaker part.

That's not as big a problem for pivot shoes since they're a less complex part.
