Replacing old spiral balances
To Whom It May Concern:
We were so happy to find your site! We have older windows that looked as though at one time were cord and weight driven, but someone replaced that with a spiral balancing mechanism (wish they had kept the old cord/weight system intact...much easier to repair). Anyway, we have been working on many of our windows this summer, and we have discovered after removing the sash, replacing the old glass and then tried to reinstall the sash and reconnecting the spiral balancer, it just wasn't working. So, thank God you are here to help!!
The colored tip, to us, looks to have been white when new, but to be more accurate, we also weighed the windows. As you can see in one of the photos, the foot at the bottom of the mechanism had been bent at one time. The feet on the other window's spiral balancers are straight, telling us that straight is the proper way for this mechanism.
We will also need the tension rod tool for adjusting the tension. I would like to note that this will be the first time working with this type of window mechanism, so we are praying it will go fairly smoothly!! Winter is just around the corner for us, so installing these windows in a timely fashion is important.
We look forward to hearing from you! Please let us know what you have decided is the appropriate balancer and we will go further. Thank you ever so much!! Please see below for measurements and window weight. If you need any other information, please let us know. Again, thank you!!
Outer tube length......18 & 7/8"
Diameter........ 5/8"
Window weight...7 lbs.
Most sincerely grateful,
Steve & Melinda

Hi Steve & Melinda. I believe we can help. Older wood windows tend to use our Series 500 Spiral Balance. I think the S500-19, with a Red Tip color option, would be your best bet. These use brackets like our 17-007 or 17-012. For a charging tool, see our 75-005. This blog post here discusses how to adjust and replace Non-Tilt window Spiral Balances. Let me know if you have further questions. |
Thank you for getting back to us. We are in the process of ordering the mechanisms and charging tool you suggested. We look forward to receiving them and getting our windows buttoned up for winter....praying all goes well with the charging process. Well, as they say...you learn something new everyday and this will be a learning experience for us. :-)
Thank you again! Take care and stay well.
Steve and Melinda
