Spiral sash replacement

A quick learner from Newnan georgia says:
I'm replacing all the broken spiral sash balances on my windows and in removing the first four I noticed that they have black bushings which would indicate they are for heavy windows. The sash weighs in at 18 pounds. Should I go back with the black ones or replace with a different balance rated closer to the weight of the window?

You should definitely choose a tip color that better matches the actual weight of the window. It's possible your tips are miscolored or perhaps even that the original installers chose the wrong one. The weight of the sash doesn't lie, though, and at the end of the day that's what you want to base your balance's strength off of.
