Survivor 5500 Vinyl Window Spiral Insert

Handy Person from IN
IN 1999? I installed Survivor 5500 solid vinyl windows in my home. There is a tube 24 and 1/4 inch long that has a sprial insert in a tbe which feels like maybe a spring inside of it. This part has failed and I need a new one. the top of this tube just has a hole in it and a screw goes thru it to the window frame. The bottom has a flat piece with 2 short pins protrudinff that do into a nylon bock that the window snaps into. this rod is what holds the window in position when you open it. The outside of the tube .385 to .390 in diameter. The tube also has some paint markings on theoutside of it which are hard to read but appear as GU A O or U .

It sounds like you have a spiral balance, though its hard to gauge exactly what type based on your verbal description. Would it be possible to see a phot of the original out of the window? I am specifically interested in the bottom tip that goes into a nylon block. That sounds like it could be a pivot shoe but it could be a few other things, too, and seeing it will confirm for me without any room for doubt.

Thank you! This looks like a typical tilt window spiral balance. With that in mind, and based on the given diameter, I would recommend our S900-24.

All orders can be placed directly on our site at your convenience. The charging tool would be our 75-006.

Hello, I have these type of spiral balance in my windows. Can you give me any help on how to replace it? I bought the replacement parts from you and have the winder but to get the tilt in with the 2 pins you have to insert into the shoe at about a 45 degree angle. It is the impossible to get the top screwed in without it spinning and losing the tension because when you drop it into the track it unwinds. There must be a way. Can you help? Thank you!

Hello! We show the proper way to insert a spiral balance into the pivot shoe in the video below. Hopefully watching this will clear things up and allow you to complete the install. Please do let me know if you have any questions, though; we're always here to help.

This black guide is a component in your hinge assembly. These unfortunately aren't sold separately, so if yours is broken you will need an all new hinge.

We may be able to help, but I'll need more information about the hinge in general. The best place to start is to get me the length of the base track. Photos of the complete hinge assembly removed from the window would also be helpful. With that data in mind, I can check our inventory for a good match.

You may also find the video below to be helpful.

Hi, I was afraid to remove the window from the hinge assembly because cold weather was coming and I wasn't sure I could put it back together. I need both hinge assemblies and some spiral balances as well. What exactly would you need as I am afraid to remove the hinge in case it finishes it off? Do you offer phone support?

The only thing that would allow me to tell you exactly what you need right now is photos. Your next step should be to remove the old hardware entirely from the frame, take clear shots without obstruction, and upload them here for me to review. That goes for both the spiral balance and the hinge.

For the spiral balance, I need to see the top and bottom ends, as well as the pivot shoe it fits into. For the hinge, I need to see the complete assembly in as close to assembled condition as you can manage.

This is a necessary step, since too much of the hardware in question is obscured in the photos you've already taken. At this stage you could have anything. Utilizing our part identifier service effectively does require a fair amount of handiwork on your end. If you aren't comfortable doing this, as you fear breaking the hardware, then you should consider having a local professional come out and repair these windows for you.

In the meantime, you can see our full selection of spiral balances here, and our hinges here.

Does this help you? I made a diagram of the hinge and size plus screw placement and photos.

Thanks, that's a big help. My top recommendation would be the 36-048. Based on your diagram I feel confident that this will work in your window, but only if you replace the top and bottom at the same time. You never want to mix old and new hinges.

Also note that it may not be an easy 1:1 replacement. You may not need to drill new holes, but you should be prepared for that outcome just in case.
