Window will not stay open

Handy Person from Bedroom

My window will not stay open!! I believe it is the spiral balance? I don't really know, which is what brought me here!! The other day while closing my window, I heard a loud noise(similar to maybe a spring coming unhinged) from the right side, then all of a sudden...window could not stay open. Please help.

Sincerely,

Jennifer

Hello, Jennifer. You are 100% right, what you have here is a balance and your balance is almost certainly what's causing issues with your windows. These are precisely tensioned spring rods that keep your window up when you open it, so if your window is falling down then that means one (or both) of your springs lost their tension.

I think we can help, but I can already tell there will be a few roadblocks. Right away I see that your window is a non-tilt type, which is a very old style that isn't that popular anymore. We do carry non-tilt spiral balances but to be perfectly honest with you they are a dying breed. There is a chance we may not sell exactly what you have installed. I just want to tell you that now so that I don't get your hopes up. That said, I'll do my best to help.

To start with, please have someone raise and hold the window open for you while you check the two bottom corners of the sash (the sash is the glass panel that you're actually opening and closing). I want you to take a picture of what you find down there; I'm hoping it will be a hook or bracket of some kind. It's an important detail and will hopefully give me the clue I need to ID what you have.

Depending on what we see down there, I may or may not need more information. Just keep that in mind.
