Double hung windows - 20 years old. When I unlock the window, the top sash immediately falls approx 4-6 inches on many of the windows. Do I adjust the friction shoe by turning the screw clockwise ? Thank you. Mark

If you turn the screw clock wise, it should add pressure to the spring, which should in turn help your situation. Let me know if that works out.

Thanks Paul, I appreciate the response. I've cranked the screw down clockwise until I screams "uncle". No affect on the window dropping.
I've got a spring tension jig that I rigged up to test the tension of those springs. I guess that's my "final answer", right ?
Any other thoughts ?

Hmmm... I'm not sure what else you can do. It's possible you just need a new shoe. It might be too worn to adjust.
