Balance measurement

A handy person from Richmond KY says:
I am going to attempt the retrofit some home windows with channel balance systems that previously did not have them. They previously uses long springs with a pivot shoe that constantly broke or failed within a vinyl jamb liner channel. I would like an estimation of the length of balance to purchase as a starting point to attempt this. My sash measures 37.5 inches overall and the glass unit measures 34 inches. The weight is right at 22 pounds. This is one specific units. I would also appreciate the formula you would use to calculate this for future windows should I be successful.

Do you have the depth measurements available for both the channel and shoe for the Series 775 balance? I would like to attempt to use in a vinyl jamb liner that has a 1/2 inch channel.

Thanks for writing in. The Series width and depth of the metal channel used in the Series 775 is 9/16" by 9/16". However, I stress that in general we highly advise against trying to use different balances with replacing originals. It's always best to try and use the same type of balance, or as close as possible. If your balances were a jambliner system, I don't think this is going to work; you ultimately may be better off taking your jambliners to a local millwork and having them replace the setup for you. Let me know what you think.

I understand your advice. Perhaps too large anyway. I would still like to have a response to the question on top please.

Perhaps I can be of assistance. I am assuming your current spring system uses something like our 15-104 Friction Shoe. You may be able to use a S751-34 Channel Balance instead; this comes with the 15-014 Knife Lock Shoe attached. You'd want to try the stamp option of 34C, for a sash weighing between 22 through 27 lbs. Keep in mind I am very skeptical that this will actually work; I certainly can't guarantee that it will. As Bob said, trying to switch components this drastically often has poor results. Still, if you really want to try this, this is your best option. Otherwise, replacing the jambliners is ultimately the conventional solution.
