Screen mesh and spline.

I'm trying to salvage screen frames from the early 50's. They are steel frames with 1/4" solid steel splines, and used copper mesh. I've been told by a few local screeners that they were originally assembled in a large press, and that they are virtually impossible to rebuild unless you have access to an original press.

I'm planning on TIG welding the short, 2" clip which covers the frame joint, back onto the frame itself, then use the foam core spline to install either FG or Al mesh. In your experience, do you think it would work, which spine size (.25 or .27") would work best, and which which mesh would work best? (FG or Al) I already made an attempt to fit the original steel spline back into the frame with Al mesh. The mesh just shredded, of course.

I remember repairing this type of screen when I was younger for my dad (child labor laws, anyone?). I would pull the metal spline and my dad would replace it with the 59-270, but ultimately it would depend on the metal spline you're replacing. We used the 59-270 along with an aluminum screen cloth like the 47-036 or the 47-048R depending on the width of the screen frame. I'm not sure if a fiberglass screen cloth with lock into the frame and the copper screen cloth would be very expensive.
