We have 2 of these door locks, both of which we are assuming that some kind of spring mechanism is out of sorts as neither door handle will remain in the horizontal position

Thanks for posting. See our 40-150 Inside Latch. This pull 'carries' all the tension for the handle set, so replacing it should also stop the outside handle from drooping. Take a look, review the specifications, and see if you think this latch could work for you.
