Tilt window - balance replacement

A handy person from Kauai says:
I don't know the manufacturer. There are no markings.

Two photos are on one side, the other photo is the other side.

Also the "pins" on the widow that slide into the balance are gone(corroded away).

Hey there,

Thanks for writing in! Your coil balance pivot shoe looks like it could be the 15-228 Pivot Shoe. It is a bit difficult to tell from the photos of the assembly because it is obstructed by the frame. That said, you'll need to remove the shoe from the window and carefully compare the dimensions below.

Dimensions for 15-228
Dimensions for 15-228

This shoe is compatible with either the 1/2" wide Series 160 or the 3/8" wide Series 165 Coil Balance springs. To determine which of these series you have, you'll need to confirm the measurement the width of your coil spring.

Then, to determine the spring strength needed for your repairs, you'll need to look for any stamps/markings that might indicate the strength of the springs. If there are none or they are hard to read, you'll need to obtain the exact weight of the sash and divide it by the total number coils in the window.

In regard to the rusted pivot bar, there are a few different pivot bars compatible with this shoe. Are you able to check any other similar windows that could possibly still have a good pivot bar? That would help a great deal in identifying the correct replacement.

When completing your repairs it may take a little effort to remove the rusted pivot bars but it is possible. I've included two tutorials below that give detailed instructions on removing rusted pivot bars and how to replace them.
