Vertical window won't stay up, locking mechanism broke

A quick learner from Hayward, CA says:
Hello I have a vertical aluminum window that won't stay up, I have to use a stack to prop it open. The house was built in 1955. The piece broke off when I tried to open it up because it was shut closed for a long time. Please help. Thanks.
