how do i tell the difference between surface and face mount

A quick learner from New Jersey says:

i going to order 39-393 operator. don't know which one to get.
hte crank handle is good but it won't close or open all the way i get a clicking sound

Thanks for posting! Given that window will not open or close and you are getting the clicking sound, it is likely there is something wrong with the gears on the inside of the operator. 

To confirm the best possible replacement, I'll need to see a photo of your entire casement operator. It would be best to see the operator removed.
