Sliding Door Roller Replacement

A quick learner from St. Augustine, FL says:
I have a number of patio windows with rollers that need to be replaced. Each window has two roller assemblies, and each window weighs 20-25 lbs. Since the windows are exposed to water, the roller itself needs to be plastic, like the existing ones, or something other than a metal that can rust. Attached are photos of a roller assembly with some dimensions. Due to the camera lens position, there might be a slight variation in the precise dimensions in the photos. If you can, please provide me with information on the roller assembly I need to order from you. Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for writing in! Your patio sliding glass door roller reminds me of the 81-020 Sliding Door Roller. Take a look over the dimensions and compare them to your existing roller to confirm that this roller has the same housing measurements as yours.

Keep in mind, this roller has a 1-1/2" concave, steel ball bearing wheel so you would need to swap out the wheel for a nylon wheel. Our 81-236A should work well to replace the steel roller along with one of the axles from the 81-310 Roller Axle Repair Kit.

Take a look at the video below for a visual demonstration on how to swap out the wheels.

Thanks very much for the information on replacing the rollers. I will be ordering some rollers (81-020), nylon wheels (81-236A), SS Phillips Truss screws (33-106) and the roller axle repair kit (81-310) as you recommended. I will be ordering about four units to begin with to make sure everything is the correct size and that I can perform the work appropriately. If I replace all roller assemblies, I will need to purchase about 30 or so rollers and associated parts. My question regards the roller axle repair kit. Once I determine the type of axle to replace (or can multiple types of axles be used?) I will order the kit. However, do I need a separate roller repair kit for each roller and nylon wheel to be replaced?

I'm happy to help! This kit includes an assortment of different axle options, so it isn't very likely that they'll all fit the 81-236A. Since this is a single roller and you are only replacing one wheel, you'd only need 15 kits.
