removing sashes to access balances

Quick Learner from united states
I have some older (late 60's) windows that i would like to replace the balance on. I can't seem to understand how to remove the sashes though. They have aluminum jams and the balances seem to be connected with a small plastic foot on the bottom of the sash and a nail into the jam at the top. Any suggestions on how to remove sash so that I can access and change the balances? Thanks so much!

You will need to remove the interior trim on the sides and top. Remove the staples. Now pull in the sashes and jamb liners together. Then take the jamb liners to your nearest mill work, and they will replace them with a new set.
