I have purchased 2 springs (20-001) for a window that will not stay up. The windows are very old and have the old style tesion spring inset into the side of the sash. Do I need to remove these before attaching the tension spring? When you refer to the sash is that the part that holds the window glass and slides up and down?

Yes, you might have to remove them. However, maybe try the 20-001 first to see if they will operator for you without the added labor. The sash is the part that goes up and down. Take care if your house built before 1978, you might expose lead dust if you have to remove the wood sashes out of your window. See the EPA Web site and their brochure Renovate Right with Lead Paint.
