the plastic end is gray. With the window open it is 26 inches long, and when the window is closed it is about 48 inches long

Thanks for posting. For old wooden sashes like yours, we recommend an old stand-by balance system that has been used by wood window manufacturers since the 1940s: our Series 500 Non-Tilt Spiral Balance. You can use either our 17-007 or the 17-012 as the bottom bracket, depending on which most closely matches your old hardware. You also might want the 75-004 or 75-005 charging tool if you need one. See what you think.
