Replacing Window Channel Balance

A quick learner from Haskell OK says:
I have old windows that don't close all the way and I paid a window guy to replace the balance in some of them however I want to try to fix the rest of them myself. If my Windows are 28x27 7/8 what size balance should I buy to replace them? Are they the same size as the windows or smaller?

Thanks for posting. I'd be happy to help you replace your balances, but I am afraid I need more information. There are many difference types of balances, and a wide variety can be used for a window sash of any given size. Therefore, the best thing to do is to see pictures of the balances removed from the window. Are they indeed channel balances? If so, provide pictures of the end attachments as well as the length of the metal channel (but not including the end attachments). Let us know what you find, and we'll go from there.

Okay, many thanks for these photos. Based on the characteristic nylon attachments this looks like it belongs to either our Series 351 or Series 390 channel balances. The only difference between these two balance Series is the 'depth' of the bottom nylon shoe. The Series 351 bottom nylon shoe has a depth of 1", whereas the Series 390 bottom nylon shoe has a depth of 1-1/8". Compare with your old balances and see what you think matches best.

You will need to measure the length of the metal channel, not including the nylon attachments, to determine the balance length you must select. Based on your stamp number this is likely 29"; but I would measure this out to confirm. Additionally, when you said your windows are 28" x 27-7/8", did you mean the visible glass size? Just let us know to be safe.

Assuming you need either our S351-29 or S390-29, you would then select a stamp option of 2830. This option is for a sash weight range of 16 through 23 lbs. If you are uncertain this is correct, you can always weigh your window sash to make sure it fits within this weight range. Let us know if you have any further questions.
