Screen Door rollers need replacement

A handy person from Myrtle Beach SC says:
The first two photos are of the top of the door, the 3rd and 4th are of the bottom. The bottom 3rd pic does not rotate, the 4th does turn but does not protrude below the door.

The top rollers are fine. But there is no screw holding them in place. They seem to be in a slot in the frame.

I don't want to pry the bottom one's out without some advice.

It looks like it is a part 84-001, 031, 006s, or 75-007. Can I replace with SS 84-107 or 106. We are on the Beach so stainless would be a good choice.

Thank you for reaching out to us. Normally the 84-001 has an adjustment screw that goes through the patio screen up from the screen spline groove. See the video related on this page for "How to repair a spring roller".

However, I don't see that adjustment screw in your door. Could you send us some photos showing the location of the adjustment screw in your door? We would also like to see some photos up inside the cutout in your door where the roller comes out at the bottom. This might help us identify how to replace your roller.

A handy person from Myrtle Beach SC says:

Dave: Thanks for your reply. I have added some more pictures that may help identify the part.

I was able to remove one of the wheel assemblies from the top of the door by sliding the strap out of the "slot" in the aluminum frame.

There is no screw in the frame beside the screen. There is a pic of the edge of the corner of the frame that shows the large philips screw holding the frame together, there is another smaller philips screw above that screw that can't be turned (maybe that is supposed to be the adjustment.

There does not appear to be a "corner brace" in the door. It is quite wobbly when out of the wall frame.

What do you think I should do?

Thanks, Don

Thanks for getting back to us, Don. It does appear that your roller looks like a match for the 84-107 or 84-001. I'm just not sure how it is held into your door frame.

Did you have any type of screw-up inside the cut-out of the door that held the roller in place?

As for the corner of the screen, maybe you need to tighten up the corner screw in the frame or install a new screw into the corner. However, I would suggest spraying the corner screw with some type of spray lubricant like a WD-40 so that the screw will come out easily. You don't want to break the screw.

This door looks like Jim Walters extruded screen door with a side adjusting screw. They used the 84-006 door roller with a pin at the end that locks into a hole inside the frame. I wonder if someone replaced the original roller with the 84-001.

A handy person from Myrtle Beach SC says:
Sorry for not responding yesterday. I was travelling back home. I am a part owner in the Condo where the Screen Door is located. I will be returning there in August. Hopefully to do the replacement

There is no screw inside the door to hold the "strap" in place. It fits into a slot in the aluminum frame. To remove the one that I took out I used a screwdriver to push the strap out of the slot. To put it back in I put the spring part towards the inside of the door and pulled the wheel to put the strap into the slot.

I do not know if the rollers have been changed. The sliding door is relatively new (4 years) but I think the screen is from the old door.

For me to remove the bottom rollers I will have to destroy them. They are "frozen" into the frame. One does roll but I cannot get to the strap. The other does not roll at all and is struck to the frame. I did spray them with W-40 and the door is functioning with one wheel just sliding on the track.

Will I be able to replace with the Stainless-steel ones? I am thinking of the stainless spring and plastic rollers.

I could not see a manufacturers name on the frame. The small screw on the frame corner may be the adjusting screw, I could not turn it. I do not know how it would adjust the roller spring since the spring I removed was pointing towards the inside of the door.

If you have any other questions one of the other owners will be there for the next three weeks, for me to contact and get the information.

Thanks again for your help.

When you said that the rollers might have been replaced it got me thinking. Take a look at the 84-101 roller along with the related 95-020 corner. I'm wondering if this is the type of roller assembly you have in your door. Go over the specifications and see what you think.

A handy person from Myrtle Beach SC says:
It is not the 84-101. It has a strap hinge on it. There does not seem to be a corner in the door. Only the two screws at the 45 degree corners.

From the picture I sent of the roller assembly, do you think I can replace it with the 84-106?

Looking at your existing rollers, I do believe you could replace them with the 84-106. My question is how do you adjust your rollers in the door?

I do not know how the rollers are adjusted. The small screw in the corner cannot touch the spring.

I personally have never adjusted the rollers. The door is very light, I think that it relies on the springs in the assembly to hold the door up. - May be wrong.

Regarding my name being deleted from the post - I think that I hit the unsubscribe button by accident. I hope by responding to the above post I am back on the list. thanks. My email is above.

I am thinking that I should order two 84-106 to install in the bottom of the door to see if it works. Since the ones that are in there will have to be destroyed in taking them out, because they are either frozen in place, or the wheel turns and I cannot get to the strap because the bracket holding the wheel is frozen to the frame.

What do you think? Dave, I appreciate the time and effort you put into answering my questions.

Thanks,

Don

I think the 84-106 is a good place from looking at your photos, yes. You can find our return policy here just in case.

On removing your old rollers, check to see up into the cut-out if there is a small Phillps screw. In some doors, there is a small Phillps screw that goes through that hole in the roller spring into the door.
