Which part goes on the top of the screen door?

the long stem,,which way does it face, to the inside or outside of the door?

Normally, you would install the roller with the spring away from the corner. The reason being that the spring could push the corner key of the door. Take a look at the video below. As for which roller to use, the 84-001 was the original design of the wheel with the "w" type spring. The 84-084 roller with the "c" type spring was a later design. Both rollers function the same way in the patio screen door.
