3 series 600 balances questions

Handy Person from New Jersey
1) are the black the strongest graduating down to white?

2) is a stronger balance more likely to last longer?

3) can spiral balance windows be fitted with an improved balance that might last longer?

Although I have limited window experience, I am a retired carpenter and good with mixing and matching materials and parts if the situation permits.

Great questions! Here you go:

1) Yes, the black is strong and gets lighter as you go down to the white. The weight of the sash determines the color balance tips.

2) The stronger balance does not necessary extending the life of the balances. Many factors play a role in life expectancy. The weather, high humidity, direct sunlight and how often the windows are being used.

3) You can periodically clean the tracks, give them a spray of silicone and add new grease to the spiral to help in the balance life and operation.
