Question

I don't know when my window units were manufactured. Can you tell me what the adapter does so I can try to figure out whether I need it or not?

The adapter just allows the operator to mount on the different type of window, since they changed the design over the years. It's a somewhat subtle difference, and not something that's easily recognizable by eye, which is why Andersen uses the year the window was made as an easy reference.  Look on the lower corner of the glass lite in your sash. Andersen usually etches the year of the window in the glass.
