70's bifold parts

Home Owner from Canada

Hello,

I have several sets of 70s vintage metal Bifold doors with hardware as shown in the attached picture and that uses an upper and a lower track. I just replaced all of the flooring in that basement with new vinyl planking and I don't want to drill holes in it to accommodate the lower tracks. I don't want to replace the doors either because I would have to replace several and that would be too expensive. I instead want to try modifying the doors to adapt them to modern Bifold hardware that does not require a bottom track.

I have an idea how I can do that but I want to try it out on one door first to make sure my idea works. As such, I am trying to remove the old hardware from the metal doors without wrecking it so I can put the door back to the way it was in case my conversion idea doesn't work. Can you please tell me how to remove the spring loaded pins from the doors in a non-destructive way?

I am trying to compress the plastic retainers with plyers while simultaneously pushing them out with a screwdriver but I can't seem to get that to work yet. I'm hoping you can tell the secret to getting that hardware off the bifolds in a non-destructive way. I don't want to ruin that hardware and then find out my conversion idea doesn't work and then not be able to return that test door back to original condition.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

There is an E-Ring just above the spring and below the top nylon bushing. you'll need to remove the E-Ring in order to slide the pin out. To remove the E-Ring, you can use needle nose pliers, a wedge, or a small screwdriver between the pin and E-Ring. Thank you.
