i have 4 windows with a sash balance that holds both sides and it looks like the #837 you have here. but my balances dont have that # instead they have a #8 on them and i dont know what brand. what do you recomend to replace them with?

There are many balances that look exactly like the 24-837 but with different stamped numbers that represent different strengths. The heavier the window sash the stronger the sash balance needs to be. You will have problems if you have a too strong of a balance or a balance that is not strong enough.
Remove your existing balance from the window and closely inspect it. You should find several different numbers and names stamped or printed on your balance.
