82-086 spindle won't fit

The spindles are meant to fit in the mortise slot tip-to-tip. If the key lock spindle is too long, then you will have to cut it to the appropriate size. 

Just make sure to do it a bit at a time. It will take trial and error to get it right. Take it from me: the last thing you want to do is cut the spindle too far so that it won't reach the mortise at all. As long as you do a bit at time then you will get it eventually, even if it's a little more work.
