82-218 mortise lock

Question

Just bought an 82-218 mortise lock for an American Craftsman sliding door. Looks like the old lock, but if I use it right side up, the existing door handles can only fit in the backward position. Can I use it upside down so the latch travels downward ? Then the handles can be installed in the right direction.

The mortise lock should work either way. You just may have to turn the striker around, as well.
