We don't have installation instructions for the 82-226 specifically, but we do have an instructional video for a similar part. It's the same principle.

I just installed one of these this morning.
1) Unscrew handle
2) unscrew lock cartridge and plate together
3) Pull it out
4) reverse procedure with new lock/plate.
The lock can't fall inside. Super simple. Took seconds.
The only problem I had was that someone stripped out one of the screw holes in the vinyl, so I had to use a #10 in a #8 screw hole.

Thanks for the help.
I installed the new lock assembly yesterday, quick and simple. I kind of expected to find at least one stripped out screw hole but did not. Just ordered a spare in case other door lock fails at some point.
Again Thanks

Do I have to remove the inside wooden handle off the door so I can line up the new latch with the locking lever?

Yes, removal of the handle will be necessary whenever you change the mortise lock out.
