Ador handle

Handy Person from Seattle, WA
Hi,

I have a very large sliding glass door with this handle on it. I am guessing handle is from 1960's. It has a lucite handle, which has broken at the mounts. Cast in the lock level is "Ador" and no other part/identifying numbers.

I would like to either find a replacement lucite handle (could be any material) or likely need to replace entire handle set. The spacing of the mount screws appears to be about 3 1/4 inches.

Thank you for writing in, Kerry. Please take a look at our 82-013 handle set. Although your handle set doesn't look identical to what you have, we believe this will still work for you. Reconfirm your measurements and match them with ours.

Do we know if this worked for Kerry? Handy Person from Seattle. I am in the same boat with 2 vintage Ador sliding doors in our 1960s sunroom, one of the handles is missing. The other looks like the one Kerry posted!

I'm seeing that 3.25" on center is not common. The one Dave Sr. linked is 3" on center. If it would work, I would order a set.

Thanks in advance for any insight! Rose

I'm sorry to say that Kerry never got back to us as to whether our 82-013 worked, but I think yours might be a little different. The handle design is very close but there is one major difference between yours and Kerry's: your handle interacts with a mortise latch that's built into the door, rather than built into the handle itself.

With that in mind, 82-013 may not be your best option. My major concern here is that there's not enough room on your frame to install the keeper that comes with it and still have it functional.

Before I suggest anything for sure, I'd like you to remove your mortise lock and show me a clear photo of it out of the door. I'm chiefly interested in seeing the hole that interfaces with the thumb lever, so that I can find you a handle that interfaces with it the same exact way. Please let me know if that would be possible.

Thanks so much for the reply Tom! I was wondering about that and I can definitely work on getting the mortise lock out of the door and send you more photos. Another piece of likely relevant information is that we have two doors and the one I'm missing the handle on closes to the right. (The photos I sent you are for the one that still exists and closes to the left). Sounds like I should be glad that the mortise lock is still extant on the right closing door. I'll let you know when I have the chance to get it out, my work schedule just shifted so it may be a few days. More soon - Rose

Better late than never! Attached are photos of the mortise lock, the latch mechanism hole easily fits a flat head screwdriver. The Company name is Adams Rite MFC. CO. Glendale California, US Patent No. 2789852

The photo with the latch out is the direction it will live in with a right side closing door, the handle I am missing. Looking forward to finding out what you think.

Great, take a look at the 82-218 mortise lock. This resembles the part shown in your photos but review the dimensions below to confirm it's a match. Thank you.

Looks like a match! The profile is perfect and side view looks good too! My latch mechanism slot (not sure what it is called, the spot where I put in the screwdriver to get the latch to move)) is .75" up from the bottom on center, which looks about the same as what it is on yours. What does this mean for a compatible handle? I'm getting very excited and hopeful....

So the 82-218 mortise is compatible with a ton of different mortise styles. The most common is going to be our 82-030, which is compatible with about a million different patio doors and especially this style mortise. My only concern is that the hole spacing is different at 3-15/16", so drilling new holes will be necessary.

The other possibility is just using our 82-013. This has the same hole spacing as your original at 82-013, but it has its own self-contained mortise and would not interact with your original in any way. Therefore you would just leave the old one in the door and pretend like it's not there.

Additionally, using the 82-013 will require drilling holes anyway, but this time you would need to drill them in the door frame so that you can install the keeper for the new latch style. The 82-013 comes with its own keeper.

I believe these are going to be the best options we can provide at this time. I know that they're not ideal, and in both cases it's going to require handiwork, but look them over and see what you think. It's basically a question of whether you want to drill new holes in the frame, or in the door.

Thanks Tom,

I'm thinking we will go with drilling holes in the door. How do I search for more of the style options that match the 82-218 mortise? The 82-030 is good but I'm curious to see more shapes. Is there a way to cruise the website with the mortise style set as a filter? Or is there another way to tell in the handle description - is it always listed?

We don't necessarily have a list of all  82-218 compatible handle sets, but I can make a list for you here. Note that in many cases the thumb lever and key lock will be in different positions, which may or may not line up with the slot in your mortise. Be mindful of that as you look through our different options. The 82-030 is my top suggestion because it has an adjustable thumb lever, allowing it to work in any position needed.

Please let me know if you had any other questions.
